    据介绍，甘肃是全国水土流失最为严重的省份之一，境内水土流失面积超过土地总面积的９０％。相关研究表明，甘肃省每年流失５．５亿吨泥沙，相当于每年损失耕作层３３厘米厚的耕地３６０万亩；河西地区有３２０多万亩农田遭受不同程度的风沙危害，占该区耕地面积的２６％；有１５１座水库每年因风力侵蚀造成入库泥沙高达１１６０万立方米，损失的库容影响近２万亩农田的灌溉。省内长江流域是滑坡、泥石流的集中分布区，有１．２万处滑坡体和６０００多条泥石流沟道直接威胁着４００多万人的生命和财产安全。
