    据中央编译局局长衣俊卿介绍，该研究中心是一个跨学科、跨部门的非盈利的学术组织，中心组成人员以中共中央编译局从事国外马克思主义研究的专家、学者为主体，另从国内外聘请国外马克思主义研究领域若干著名或知名学者为特聘研究员。

    研究中心的主要职能是：为党和国家的领导机构提供关于国外马克思主义及左翼理论方面的资讯，为中央决策服务，为党的理论建设服务；组织和协调中共中央编译局国外马克思主义研究领域的研究活动；开展国内外学术交流与合作，举办全国性和国际性学术会议；编辑和出版国外马克国主义研究方面的学术刊物和学术著作；指导中央编译局国外马克思主义研究领域在站博士后的科研工作。

    研究中心有两大研究重点：一是新马克思主义发展史研究，这一研究侧重于思想史的维度，尝试用新的理论视野重新梳理、评价新马克思主义的人物与流派；二是对新马克思主义理论出现的新动向、新趋势的跟踪研究，这一研究侧重于现实的维度，着力展现马克思主义在面对资本主义和社会主义的新问题时做出的新回应。

    研究中心在成立之际创办了一个以刊载国外马克思主义研究方面的优秀译文为主的学术刊物《新马克思主义评论》，每辑集中一位著名思想家或一个学派，围绕一个主要理论范畴或概念展开专题探讨，选译国外著名学者讨论此一问题的重要学术论文１０至１５篇。第一系列为“西方马克思主义早期经典人物”，首先推出《卢卡奇专辑》《柯尔施专辑》《葛兰西专辑》，随后将全面展开“新马克思主义前沿系列”。
