库克群岛总理普纳(Henry Puna)在太平洋岛国峰会开幕式上宣布这一消息时表示，这个新的海洋保护区总面积将达到106万平方公里，将是有史以来由一个国家负责的最大的海洋综合管理区。

Pune said：“The cook islands Marine reserves will provide the necessary sustainable development framework，Balance tourism、Fisheries and deep sea mining economic activities，And the maintenance of this sea area core biological diversity。”

　　普纳还呼吁其他太平洋岛国一起设立海洋保护区，为该海域建立一个庞大的海洋保护网络。
