据介绍，厦门火车站的改造工程由南北两站房和市政配套工程两大部分组成。改造完成后的厦门火车站将实现华丽“变身”，其造型像一只展翅的白鹭，面积将大大增加。其中，主站房总建筑面积2.76万平方米；采用高架候车室，面积达7449平方米，是现有候车面积的5倍，设计标准为小时最高峰聚集人数4000人；站场规模由现在的3站台5股道扩大到5站台9股道。改造后的厦门火车站设有南北两个广场，将形成集铁路、长途汽车、出租车、公交和社会车辆等为一体的城市综合交通枢纽中心。其中，北广场在现有广场进行改造，用地1.4万平方米。
