　　林显伟说，三沙远离大陆，常年高温、高湿、高盐、高日照，缺水、缺土、多台风。独特的地理环境，也决定了一些独特的“岛病”，如“减压症”、“羔虫病”等。原来建于1959年的西南中沙群岛人民医院场地小、设备简陋。海南建设国际旅游岛上升为国家战略以及三沙设市后，三沙旅游将对外开放，游客会大量增加，医疗需求也将进一步提高。为加快三沙卫生事业发展，经国家发改委批准，三沙市人民医院作为一级医院在永兴岛原西南中沙群岛医院的基础上兴建，规划建设门诊楼和住院楼各一幢，建筑面积2338平方米，项目总投资1800万元。资金来源由农村医疗卫生服务体系县级医院建设项目中央预算内投资全额安排。

　　林显伟介绍，由于三沙远离海南本岛，医院建设的一砖一瓦，甚至一粒沙子都要从海南岛运输过来。根据目前建设进度，预计到2013年6月左右，医院可建成投入使用。届时，医院设有儿科、外科、妇产科等多个科室。医院建成后，一些较大的疾病能在永兴岛得到救治，将极大地改善驻岛军警民日益增长的医疗卫生服务条件，满足三沙市军警民及游客的基本医疗需求。 (记者范南虹 郭景水 通讯员黄广南)
