　　2003年夏天，受卫生部委托，赵红心作为艾滋病医疗专家到河南艾滋病高发村工作。当时人们对艾滋病的认识还停留在“洪水魔兽”的层面上。来到工作现场，环境十分简陋：没有诊桌、诊床，甚至没有白大褂、没有手套、隔离衣、口罩，看病只能坐在老乡家炕上或长条板凳上。许多感染者都进入了发病期，有的已经出现了并发症。平时只能在书本上看到的口腔糜烂、皮肤溃烂、痒疹，在那里都看到了。没有口罩、手套，赵红心只能徒手操作查看患者。有些患者长期得不到医治，再加上卫生条件差，身体发出的气味刺鼻难闻。半天下来，赵红心看了十几个病人，后边还有许多排队的老乡等着。赵红心感到头晕眼花，心里起急上火。就在此时，她觉得背后有了阵阵凉意：一个老大妈，扒拉开人群，拿着芭蕉扇在给她扇风。
