云南华文学院作为国家级面向东南亚创新人才培养模式的试验区，积极采用全国首创的人才培养模式，为云南桥头堡建设培养高水平急需人才。面向东南亚招生的国际经济与贸易、对外汉语、旅游管理、金融学、汉语言等非语言类专业采用“2+1+1”人才培养模式。前两年主要夯实基础，就学第三年，学生在东南亚国家合作院校学习小语种语言文化和部分专业课程并完成专业见习和实习，强化实践教学，第四年回国后学生继续学习相关专业主干课程和专业选修课程并完成毕业论文。这些专业的学生进校后要从缅甸语、泰国语和越南语中选择一种作为第一外语，并兼修英语作为第二外语，使学生成为“专业+小语种”的应用型、双语人才。
