陶西平，国家总督学顾问，站在北京四中礼堂的讲台上，背后屏幕上是一张他1948年考入四中时学生档案上的照片。照片上的少年身穿白衬衣，面庞清瘦，眼光清澈。那年他13岁。

　　陶西平家里经济困难，母亲一个人要养活5个孩子。上了大学后，因为贫困交加，陶西平病倒了，不得不休学。

　　“每个人都有时代的印迹，我比其他人经历了更多的挫折。失败是财富，之所以没有倒下，是因为在中学时代就树立了坚定的信念，可以迎接多种挑战。”陶西平回忆当年，条件非常艰苦，早饭是一个窝头和一点咸菜，中午是两个窝头和白菜，晚上两个窝头，一年吃一顿肉。但因为有理想、有信念，一点不觉得苦，都坚持下来了。

　　有一个残疾学生，入校后看到其他残疾同学都可以参加各项运动，就决心练长跑。经过一段时间的锻炼，他去参加比赛。但很快就第一个摔倒，后面的人马上跑到了他前面。可是这些人后来也都一个个摔倒了。最后这名残疾学生拿了冠军，在接受记者采访时，他说：“拿到冠军，不是因为我跑得最快，而是因为我爬起来得快。”
