2012年首都高校游泳锦标赛12月8日在北京育英学校游泳馆举行。依照惯例，比赛分成甲、乙组进行。甲组基本上由体育特长生和专业运动员组成，乙组是普通大学生，两者的竞技水平差距显著。如何让更多大学生走进比赛场，让大学生比赛真正以普通大学生为主角，或许还需从培养大学生的体育运动习惯入手。

　　北京作为一座高校集中的大城市，大学生游泳比赛的规模也比较大，本届比赛就有20多所高校的300多名选手参加。甲、乙组选手差不多各占一半。但在2005年时，北京大学生游泳锦标赛还是以甲组选手为主。刘振卿回忆说，当时的参赛运动员中，甲组选手占到七成左右，乙组选手约占三成。“甲乙组的区别在于，甲组选手为专业队运动员和体育特长生，他们完全是借助体育方面的才能进入大学。乙组选手则是普通大学生，入校时没有任何体育特长加分。”刘振卿介绍说，如果甲组选手代表了大学生游泳运动的最高水平，那么乙组选手则体现着游泳运动在普通大学生中的群众基础。

　　“近几年，北京普通大学生游泳水平的发展速度比较快，这从我们每年举办的首都大学生游泳锦标赛的赛事规模就能看出来。”刘振卿介绍，“经教育部批准，可以建立高水平游泳运动队的北京高校只有5所，再加上3所体育类和师范类院校，全北京现在只有8所高校可以派队参加甲组比赛，因此，甲组比赛的规模近些年来一直变化不大。首都大学生游泳比赛的规模扩大主要来自乙组参赛人数的不断增加，从2005年到现在，乙组参赛队伍和参赛人数增加了1倍左右，建有乙组游泳队的高校也从10来所增加到20多所。”
