　　在回答中新网记者提问时，于赓哲表示，狄仁杰生前既忠于女皇武则天，同时又一直想着光复李唐。他的确是一个矛盾的人，因为他生活在矛盾的时代。在于赓哲来看，狄仁杰对武则天的“忠”，是对武则天个人的“忠”。因为当时只有武则天有能力支撑大局，唐高宗的两个儿子都不堪重任。不过狄仁杰毕竟还是受儒家影响的，而在儒家的传统思想中，女人不能掌权。所以他认为不能让武周王朝延续下去。而且武家子弟“无德、无才、无能”，从实用角度也不能传给他们。
