做学问，要脚踏实地，不务虚名，不慕官位。科学是求真求实的学问，要在科学研究上取得哪怕一点点成绩，都要下很大功夫。从事科学研究工作，就应立志在学术研究上取得成绩，脚踏实地工作，不为窗外的荣华富贵所诱惑。在这方面，范文澜先生和罗尔纲先生可称得上是我们的榜样。上世纪50年代，范文澜先生告诫新来的年轻人，要埋头学问，不要想当官，要想当官就不要到社科院近代史所。近代史所不过一百来人，所长只相当于部队的连长，要当官何必来当连长呢。这是玩笑话，寓意却很深刻。罗尔纲先生也是这样。他在南京一手创办了南京太平天国博物馆。当南京市正式任命他为馆长时，他坚辞不就，宁愿到近代史所做一名普通的研究员。后来，他担任过两届全国人大代表、两届全国政协委员，虽不能辞，遇到活动却很不适应。而对于学术研究，他却始终追求，终身不悔。正是有了这种精神，才造就了一代大学问家。
