事发前，试验场中的化工学院原307实验室委托一施工队，对该实验室的空调、自行车棚等生活设施进行拆除，并为其发放了临时出入证。该施工队在拆除过程中，看到已停用的化工学院原319实验室中有大量金属构件，于是利用临时出门证，携带氧气瓶和液化气罐及切割工具，欺骗门卫进入试验场中，并撬开319实验室的门，用明火切割的方式私自盗拆实验室里的金属构件，引发爆炸，造成房屋坍塌。
