南科大于2007年5月启动筹建，2012年4月16日获批建立。5年来，南科大在开展教改实验、组建教师队伍、设置学科专业、构建现代大学治理结构、完善管理体制机制等方面开展了广泛探索，取得阶段性成效。

　　成立大会上，南科大校长朱清时难掩喜悦和激动之情。他说，新中国成立60多年来，我国教育的规模越来越大，经费投入越来越多，可是大批创新人才仍不见涌现。一个原因在于我国的教育只重视传授知识、只重视学生掌握知识的情况，不仅忽视、甚至伤害了学生的创新素质。因此，南科大改革的核心内容，就是探索如何培养大批创新人才。

　　开学典礼上，朱清时勉励今年入学的188名新生，要以“世界前沿眼光、国际一流标准”去要求自己、衡量自己的创新能力和学业成绩；要培养健全的人格、高尚的品德，只有成就品格之大道，才能成就学问之大道；希望同学们能够成长为真正有国际视野、独立思考能力、社会责任感和文化修养的创新型人才。
