　　2007年，安利北京分公司在宣武培智学校和东城特教学校成立长期志愿服务基地，吕嘉珩坚持每周都抽出一个下午去陪残障孩子画画、唱歌、玩游戏。刚开始的时候，身为家中独子的他照顾起小孩来很费力，尤其不习惯照顾那些生活不能完全自理的孩子。但凭着坚持和用心，他克服了种种困难，怀着诚心、耐心和童心与孩子们交往，从而建立了深厚真挚的感情。在一次带领孩子们游野生动物园的志愿活动中，宣武培智学校一个叫刘嘉豪的孩子突然叫了他一声“爸爸”，让还没结婚的吕嘉珩着实愣了一下。他很喜欢刘嘉豪，因为名字中都有一个“嘉”字，他总觉得和这个孩子之间是一种难得的缘分。

　　通过多次参加助残志愿活动，吕嘉珩慢慢了解到，在残疾人群体中，聋人因为缺乏与外界进行语言沟通的能力，很难获取信息，因此处于更弱势的地位。他决定把聋人作为自己助残的主要对象。在北京世纪坛举行的一次助残活动中，吕嘉珩结识了来自北京联合大学特教学院的聋人朋友张龙。为了与张龙更好地交流，吕嘉珩开始有意识地向他学习手语。
