　　耿昭华透露，麻将社的几个发起人也曾和他谈起过创建这样一个社团的初衷，“其实就是一些同学对这个比较感兴趣，平常也常在一块玩。他们就想，为什么不成立一个社团，聚集起更多的同学来探讨一下呢？”麻将社所参与的竞技麻将并不以赢利为目的，而是通过特定的规则，如引入标准分制等来降低手气的影响，强调竞技性和技术性，甚至涉及到统计学和概率学，“一些同学认为，参与竞技麻将也可以把自己的专业知识运用进去。”耿昭华说。他还表示，在发起创建麻将社的同学中，也有人希望通过这种方式向大家证明麻将并不是只会让人沉溺于赌博，耿昭华说：“像电子游戏、麻将都会给人先入为主的一个评判，有些人确实会沉溺游戏、导致赌博，但并不是所有人都这样。麻将社的副社长也是电子游戏社团的副社长，组织成立这两个社团的同学在成绩上都还是比较好的，所以玩这些并不代表他们是差生或是不好好学习。”
