汤唯出生于一个艺术家庭，母亲施西凤曾是浙江乐清小有名气的演员，父亲汤余铭是画家。1997年汤唯高考落榜，父母让她进了职业模特队，但提醒她：“要想真正在演艺圈有前途，还得有文化。在考上大学之前，不准谈恋爱！”在职业模特队，每天训练、表演完毕，别的女孩忙于恋爱、逛街，汤唯却捧起了书本。经过3年不懈努力，汤唯终于考入中央戏剧学院导演系。
