　　镜头切回1999年，为寻找纪录片选题，张老师的朋友老徐陪他驾车畅游宁夏，拜访了研究易经和宇宙之谜的王木匠、造飞机的牧羊老人、唱民歌的花儿大王、留在西海固的北京知青各色人等。张同道在为大李新书所写的序中描述了第一次看到大李的情景：“中秋前夕，赶到贺兰山下的小楼——老徐家住这里，我第一次见到李跃儿。李跃儿并不像老徐反复预告的‘家有傻妻’，墙上悬挂的风景油画提醒她的画家身份，但李跃儿还是给了我惊奇，一见面就讲述她父母的陈年爱情故事，细节、情境极为逼真。看过她为儿童美术班上的课，当即确定她为纪录片的主人公——这个决定有些突然，出乎她、也出乎我本人的意料，她顺应儿童天性的教育理念、对待儿童的耐心与善意、调动气氛的才华触动了我的神经，这部纪录片便是后来中央电视台播出的《沙湖画人》，沙湖边上的儿童写生成为影片的重要内容。此事定下以后，我们就带着帐篷去体验小沙湖，晚上明月当空，凉风如洗，卜居芦苇丛里的昆虫演奏着小夜曲。那一天正是中秋。
