　　周国汉介绍，六年前的几次体育课上，当他要求学生训练长跑时，一些学生对他说，“何必要那么勤快地训练呢，懒惰也是智慧，课本上都是这么说的。”为此，他对这篇课文产生了兴趣，开始对课文进行研究，后写出共约3万字的论文，如“探究《懒惰的智慧》这篇课文的时代思想背景”、“质疑《懒惰的智慧》这篇课文中‘懒惰’的观点”等。他认为选取的文章有删节，而且文章的时代背景复杂，虽然本篇课文的作者采用的是贬词褒用的写作手法，表现那些“懒于劳作”而“只要思维勤奋，‘懒惰’就可以出智慧”的科学发明创造者，但中学生往往会出现理解偏差，把“懒惰”理解为偷懒取巧，抛弃了“刻苦耐劳，勤奋学习”的思想。
