  据了解,《懒惰的智慧》是美国作者凯利发表于20世纪20年代的一篇文章,主要论点是“懒惰激励了发明,促进了人类的进步”。湖北教育出版社(简称“鄂教版”)2004年出版的初二语文教材将其收录其中,与教材配套的《教材详解》也做了解释,认为其可以培养学生“求异”的思维品质。

  周国汉介绍,六年前的几次体育课上,当他要求学生训练长跑时,一些学生对他说,“何必要那么勤快地训练呢,懒惰也是智慧,课本上都是这么说的。”为此,他对这篇课文产生了兴趣,开始对课文进行研究,后写出共约3万字的论文,如“探究《懒惰的智慧》这篇课文的时代思想背景”、“质疑《懒惰的智慧》这篇课文中‘懒惰’的观点”等。他认为选取的文章有删节,而且文章的时代背景复杂,虽然本篇课文的作者采用的是贬词褒用的写作手法,表现那些“懒于劳作”而“只要思维勤奋,‘懒惰’就可以出智慧”的科学发明创造者,但中学生往往会出现理解偏差,把“懒惰”理解为偷懒取巧,抛弃了“刻苦耐劳,勤奋学习”的思想。
