8月28日，针对“商务印书馆今年出版的第6版《现代汉语词典》收录NBA等239个西文字母开头的词语”一事，百余名学者联名向新闻出版总署及国家语言文字委员会送举报信。称该做法已违反《中华人民共和国国家通用语言文字法》、国务院《出版管理条例》（国务院第594号令）等法规。

　　8月29日，商务印书馆总编室主任刘祚臣回应：国务院办公厅的秘书局2010年曾出台一个文件，其中规定：对于国家权威机构编写的汉语词典中收录的字母词，已有对应汉语译名的，可以使用汉语译名，没有对应的则完全可以收录。“我们是权威出版机构，没有法律依据岂敢乱来？之所以收录这些英文字母词，是为了大家查找方便。”
