　　张策成名前异常刻苦，常年是三更起床，身穿铁坎肩，穿每只二十几斤重的铁鞋练功，故成名后被武术界誉为“臂圣”和“铁鞋”，分别形容其通臂拳和腿功的厉害。他和孙禄堂交情甚好，张策对孙总是以侍兄之理相待，孙也对其武功很是欣赏，经常与其切磋拳理。张策曾于1924年被张作霖请到沈阳做保镖并教其两个儿子，1928年皇姑屯事件张作霖死后，张策便任奉天国术馆任副馆长，1931年九一八事变后回到北平，任教北平国术馆。1933年夏，中央国术馆在南京筹备第二届国术考，主办者诚邀张策赴南京任副总裁判长，张策到任并于考试后即留中央国术馆任教。
