2012年5月6日，平顺县5岁女童申潇然死亡。5月7日，尸检结果显示，申潇然系身体遭到钝性暴力作用导致肠管破裂，继发腹腔感染，最终死于感染性休克。当天，申潇然的继母李艳勤因涉嫌虐待罪被平顺县公安局依法刑拘。随即，有关李艳勤长期残忍虐待小潇然的帖子在各大论坛、贴吧和微博社区疯传，引发了众多网友对李艳勤的谴责。7月10日，长治市中级人民法院公开审理了此案。8月2日，长治市中院以故意伤害罪判处李艳勤死刑，缓期二年执行。之后，李艳勤以量刑过重，且应以虐待罪量刑不应以故意伤害罪量刑等为由上诉至省高院。
