北京市第一中学简称北京一中，前身为八旗官学，建于清顺治元年 北京市第一中学(1644年)，是清王朝专为八旗子弟设立的学校。1894年经整顿增设八旗书院一所，取名经正书院。创始人徐桐，监院宗室宝丰，校址即北京一中现校址。1902年改名为宗室觉罗八旗中学堂。1904年改名为宗室觉罗八旗高等学堂。1912年蔡元培主持教育部，决定："八旗高等学堂仍准设立，唯将八旗取消，五族皆可入"，同年八月改宗室八旗高等学堂为京师公立第一中学。1949年4月1日北京市人民政府接管，改名为北京市第一中学。无论从序号还是历史，一中都是北京的第一，但是又有几个人承认他代表北京的教育水平？
