　　外国记者提问：请问陈锡文主任，中国是否允许进口转基因的食品，要是中国不允许进口的话，中国用什么办法来养越来越多的人口？

　　中央农村工作领导小组副组长陈锡文回答说，中国最近这些年来一直在进口转基因的农产品，中国也是世界上种植转基因农产品规模比较大的国家，但大主要是在棉花上，不在食品上。中国进口的转基因农产品主要集中在大豆上，去年我们进口了5838万吨的大豆，其中绝大部分都是转基因的大豆，它主要来自于美国、巴西和阿根廷。

　　陈锡文说，进口大豆最主要是两个用途，一是榨油，就是我们吃的大豆油和调和油中都有一部分是大豆榨出来的油。榨油之后的饼粕，是养殖业中饲料的最重要的蛋白质植物蛋白的来源。公众非常关心转基因的安全性问题。应该说这个问题本身在学界也有非常强的争论，公说公有理，婆说婆有理，谁也说服不了谁，谁也拿不出足够的证据说它绝对安全或者绝对不安全，所以应当通过实践来证明。自人类社会诞生以来，农业发展到现在，我们不知道已经运用了多少种新的农作物品种，每天每年都在诞生新品种，人类社会也在不断通过自己的实践来证明它的安全性。至少到目前我还没有听到过谁由于食用了转基因农产品出现了安全问题，这样的事实还没有过。
